Otunba Oluseye Opatoki, a prominent chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party in Oyo State, has issued a strong call to action to the public regarding the recent cholera outbreak that has claimed numerous lives across the nation.
Otunba Opatoki stressed the critical importance of maintaining proper hygiene, accessing clean water, and utilizing adequate sanitation facilities to curb the spread of cholera. He emphasized the collective responsibility in combating the disease, stating, “Cholera is preventable, and it is our duty to take the necessary precautions to safeguard our health and that of our loved ones. We must prioritize hygiene practices such as regular handwashing, drinking clean water, and using proper sanitation facilities.”
Additionally, Otunba Opatoki urged the government to invest in improving access to clean water and sanitation, especially in rural and underserved areas. “It’s crucial that we work together to ensure everyone has access to these basic necessities,” he added.
This call to action comes amidst a surge in cholera cases in Nigeria, with multiple states reporting outbreaks. Health experts have attributed the rise in cases to poor hygiene and insufficient access to clean water and sanitation.
Otunba Opatoki also provided guidelines to prevent cholera:

- Wash Your Hands: Frequently wash hands with soap and clean water, especially before eating and after using the bathroom.
- Use Proper Sanitation: Utilize well-maintained and clean latrines or toilets.
- Drink Clean Water: Use bottled or boiled water and avoid untreated sources like wells or rivers.
- Cook Food Thoroughly: Ensure all food, especially seafood and meat, is cooked thoroughly.
